It’s October and already autumn is upon us. Soon I’ll no longer be able to walk down onto the beach after supper to watch the sun setting. Instead I’ll be curled up in front of the fire relying on an engrossing book to block out the noise of wind and rain outside – and what better than a thriller to do that! Here are five that I’ve read (or re-read) and enjoyed recently.

I love a thriller that keeps me guessing all the way through and DE White’s Glass Dolls<\/a><\/em> is master class in how to keep the reader on tenterhooks throughout. It starts as a horrific tale of a serial killer who encases their victims in glass coffins and finishes with something equally horrifying but much closer to home for DC Dove Milson. The tension never slackens as DE White weaves an ever-growing web of potential evildoers until the reader suspects everybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cat Among The Pigeons<\/a> <\/em>is my favourite Agatha Christie, as you can probably tell from the state of my much-read copy, despite it featuring Hercule Poirot rather than Jane Marple. Although both are fabulous creations, I love Miss Marple who hides her steely acuity under a fluffy aura. Set in a girls’ school but with elements of international intrigue, revolutions in far off lands, assassinations, spies and fabulous jewels, it’s a humdinger of a story that I come back to time and time again not the least because Christie brings a cast of ten women completely to life so that you never forget who’s who \u2013 a difficult feat to pull off. And while I’m on the subject of Agatha Christie, can I recommend Sophie Hannah’s take on the Poirot mysteries. I’ve just finished Hercule Poirot’s Silent Night<\/a><\/em> and it’s a wonderful read. She gets the tricky balance between staying faithful to Christie’s creation but giving an original and witty take on the mysteries just right. Highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime fiction is a wonderfully flexible genre that inspires authors to write exciting stories in incredibly varied ways. Fiona Erskine’s thrillers often have a scientific element rippling through them and her latest, Losing Control<\/a><\/em>, which I was lucky enough to read in advance of publication, is no exception. What starts out as an apparently run-of-the-mill murder in Teesside for DI Julie Cadell rapidly develops into a tale of international skulduggery and terrorism highlighting one of the worst industrial catastrophes of the 20th century. An absolutely must-read for lovers of exciting but intelligent thrillers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I adore a speculative twist in a thriller so I was delighted to come across MJ White’s Cora Lael series. In the first book, The Secret Voices<\/a><\/em>, a child disappears in what seems to be a repeat of an abduction seven years ago that ended in tragedy and scarred many of the police who worked on the case. Fearing another failure, the police ask Cora Lael, a psychologist with psychic gifts, to help them find the child. It’s a cracker of a story and White makes brilliant use of her protagonist’s paranormal gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally a book I devoured in under 24 hours \u2013 Sarah Clarke’s latest dark and twisty thriller The Night She Dies<\/a><\/em>. I’ve long been a fan of Clarke’s writing and her ability to embed an exploration of the worst parts of the human psyche in an utterly gripping tale. The Night She Dies<\/em> sees suspicion and deceit following a local girl’s death threaten to destroy the family whose daughter she’s been bullying. With revelations continually changing the way the reader sees the characters, it’s a superbly crafted story that kept me guessing until the very end!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
